FWIW, I have been reading and loving Gao Xingjian's Soul Mountain. I'm only a third into it and doubt I'll finish it before arriving in Beijing in a few weeks. I won't be taking it with me--it's a bit disharmonious still, I suspect. Perhaps I'll finish it later and post on it and other things next fall. Xingjian won the Nobel Prize for Literature a few years back.
